I think every single song I've ever posted on this blog references drugs at some point. Posted in the Posting Lot - proudly trashy.

Personally, electro-rap is better the dirtier trashier grimier scankier more in need of penicilin it is. I am a dirty rat who appreciates dirty music, when done right. For that, "I Think I Love You" is great. There's other tracks I appreciate - "Stolen Power" for sure - but there's a fair amount of verses where the rappers don't sound all that comfortable on the beats. I'm curious to see if they keep refining this sound or try something else.

Haven't heard of those - wasn't trying to say grime was dead, just that I stopped paying attention - and just peeped "Boo You." Again, can't tell if it's awesome or average. Need to give it some more spins.

On a somewhat related note, I took a film class a couple years ago and read about how subtitles turn good films into overseas masterpieces eg apparently "The Seventh Seal" got trashed by Swedish critics because the dialogue was archaic and sounded corny, but an English-language audience wouldn't get that, all they see is the story spelled out plainly for them. Could I make an argument that something similar is going on here, with imported music whose appeal is heavily on the accents? Like because we can't quite understand what they're spitting, it sounds that much doper than it probably really is?

Eh, fuck it. If I agree to that then I have to say 95% of the Southern rap I bump enthusiastically is, when weighted by accent, not as dope as any number of boring Golden Age revivalists who say things very clearly, and you know I won't do that.

Have you peeped out any of what the Butterz camp is cooking up for the modern day Grime sound? They started out w/ several instrumental 12s and are about to drop their second vocal 12 from Trim. The first was from P Money & Blacks, titled "Boo You" - fav tune of the year for me. They've def proved to me that Grime is alive, if going through it's own metamorphosis.

This tune is pretty big.

I personally didn't like the album. For that matter though, I don't really like anything that SOTA has put out, so I am not the best reviewer. In any case, the album isn't anything like something rhymesayers would put out. Its odd to me because they (SOTA) can obviously craft some complex thoughtful lyrics (sometimes), but then they are accompanied by dry poppy electronic beats and awful hooks. They also reference drugs on every track, relevant or not, as if to satisfy that demographic. To me, seems like real talent aspiring to be trash.

I respect that you're not feeling it, I have mixed feelings on the project but.... did you listen to it? And have you ever listened to a Rhymesayers album? Or any underground hiphop album for that matter? How do these sound alike? Can you reference a Rhymesayers release that sounds remotely like this? This isn't some backpack-y shit at all, quite the opposite.
